Teaching Techniques: Prepare

About Prepare

Prepare provides evidence-based practices and skills for setting up a classroom to teach and prepare students for optimal learning. It comprises two practice modules; Practice Set Up Classroom for Teaching and Practice Prepare for Learning.

Prepare for Learning Practice Card

When teachers are prepared for learning, students have what they need to maximise learning time. Use this practice card to ensure that teachers are preparing materials for lessons appropriately and effectively.

Set Up Classroom for Teaching Practice Card

When the classroom is set up for teaching, students demonstrate fewer disruptive behaviours and participate fully in lessons. Use this practice card to ensure that teachers organise materials and furniture to maximise learning time.

Teaching Technique: Model (I Do)

About Model (I Do)

Model (I Do) provides participating educators with a range of evidence-based techniques to communicate the high expectations they have for their students.

Teach Behaviour Standards Practice Card

When a teacher has taught behaviour standards, students know exactly how they can be successful. Use this practice card to ensure that teachers effectively teach behaviour standards so students can achieve success.

Teach Routines Practice Card

When routines are in place, students know what to do, and when and how to do it. Use this practice card so that teachers are teaching routines effectively.

Embed Behaviour Standards Practice Card

When behaviour standards are embedded, a classroom runs efficiently and teaching time is maximised. Use this practice card to support teachers in reinforcing and embedding behaviour standards.

Embed Routines Practice Card

Clear classroom routines create a predictable, comfortable environment for learning. Use this practice card to ensure that teachers are embedding routines effectively.

Provide Positive Praise and Affirmations Practice Card

When teachers provide positive praise and affirmation, it supports positive teacher–student relationships, keeps the focus on learning, and boosts student confidence. Use this practice card to ensure that teachers are providing positive praise and affirmation to enhance student learning.

Use Positive Motivation Strategies Practice Card

Using positive motivation strategies includes involving students in goal-setting and rewarding students for goal mastery. Use this practice card to support teachers in promoting a mastery-goal orientation and setting classroom motivation strategies.

Teach for the Full Period Practice Card

Teaching for the full period maximises instructional time. Use this practice card to ensure teachers are teaching for the full period.

Teach the Full Lesson Fluently Practise Card

When teachers teach the lesson fluently, they deliver the lesson content with confidence and finish the lesson within the allotted time. Use this practice card to ensure that teachers are teaching with confidence and competence.

Check for Mastery Practice Card

Students achieve mastery when they have a secure understanding of content and skills. Use this practice card to ensure that teachers are checking for mastery during lessons and responding appropriately.

Note Responses to Check for Mastery Practice Card

Teachers note student responses during a lesson and use the information to adjust teaching to move students towards mastery. Use this practice card to ensure that teachers are noting response to check for mastery effectively.

Use Signals Practice Card

Teachers use signals (point–touch, audible, hand–drop) to elicit group responses. Use this practice card to ensure teachers are using signals effectively.

Teaching Technique: Lead (We Do)

About Lead (We Do)

Lead (We Do) provides participating educators with a range of evidence-based techniques to lead their students to success.

Use Individual Turns Practice Card

Using individual turns provides students with opportunities to practise skills, and provides teachers with information about how students are mastering content. Use this practice card to ensure that teachers are implementing individual turns effectively and are using the information they gain to support student learning.

Correct Signal Response Violations Practice Card

When students make an error, teachers must provide immediate, specific, and informative feedback. Use this practice card to ensure that teachers are correcting and addressing student errors effectively.

Correct Errors Practice Card

When students make specific or general errors, teachers must provide immediate, specific, informative feedback. Use this practice card to ensure teachers are correcting errors in ways that support student learning.

Address Group Errors Practice Card

Teachers use a ‘good-bye’ list to reteach skills and reinforce student progress and mastery of skills. Use this practice card to ensure that teachers are using the good-bye list to address specific group errors.

Model Student Responses Practice Card

Teachers use modelling strategies to engage students and increase participation. Use this practice card to ensure that teachers are effectively using modelling strategies to increase engagement and mastery.

Teaching Technique: Independent Practice (You Do)

About Independent Practice (You Do)

Independent Practice (You Do) provides participating educators with a range of resources on how to administer independent work, program assessments, and standardised test preparations. Participants are also taught how to remediate and retest students.

Administer Independent Work Practice Card

Independent work is a time for students to demonstrate mastery of what they have learned during the lesson. Use this practice card to support a teacher in the effective implementation of administering independent work.

Administer Independent Work Checks Practice Card

Administering independent work checks supports students’ ability to monitor their progress and fix errors promptly. Use this practice card to support teachers in monitoring independent work, giving feedback, and using the resulting information to reteach.

Administer Program Assessments Practice Card

Effective teaching programs include assessments that provide information about how well students have mastered content taught. Use this practice card to ensure that teachers are implementing program assessments correctly.

Remediate and Retest Practice Card

As teachers teach content, students may require remediation and retesting. Use this practice card to ensure that teachers are applying the appropriate strategies and procedures to reteach and retest.
